In addition to the annual Festival in January, Palm Beach Poetry Festival partners with other non-profit organizations and schools to bring poetry into the lives of Palm Beach County residents year-round.

What is a Haiku? How do I write one? Join Professor P. Scott Cunningham in this hands-on workshop and learn to write your own original Haiku. Individual reservations are not necessary. Taylor Mali and Lynn Procope, two of America’s finest performance poets, will be featured at the festival on January 24th. Stay tuned for more news about this event.

POETRY and THE JAPANESE-AMERICAN ESTHETIC, at the Morikami Museum
A workshop with P. Scott Cunningham. The work of Kimiko Hahn, a featured festival poet and one of America’s most renowned Japanese-American poets combines ancient Japanese forms with contemporary American variations to create a Japanese-American aesthetic. We will discuss Kimiko Hahn’s work and how it is influenced by traditional Japanese forms, especially the Tanka. Participants will have the opportunity to write in the Morikami gardens.

HIGH SCHOOL POETRY CONTEST
The festival will work with literary arts teachers throughout Palm Beach County and distribute contest information through the offices of school principals about the contest. Last year, we received over three hundred entries. This year students in grades 9-12 in public, private and charter schools in Palm Beach County are invited to participate. We again welcome Dr. Jeff Morgan of Lynn University, as our judge. Winner and runners up will be honored at the awards ceremony during the Festival on Thursday evening, January 22, 2009.

Word of Mouth Poetry Troupe – Reading at Brighton Gardens, Sunrise Senior Living.
A volunteer group of troubadours bring poetry into an assisted living facility reading favorite poems. We hope when hearing poems, the audience will reminisce and recall pleasant memories from their past.

A lunchtime program presented in partnership with Toussaint L’Ouverture High School. Students read and write poems, discuss them, and are offered tips on reading poems aloud. Instructor Dr. Blaise Allen, Director of Community Outreach.

American Orchid Society, Delray Beach
